BRUXISM AND ATM

Bruxism is the involuntary movement of our lower jaw that make us grind and/or rub laterally and frontally our teeth and gums. This habit is highly destructive; the power of our own overstressed muscles breaks the tooth enamel and loads the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) beyond its limits.

EFFECTS OF BRUXISM ON TEETH AND JAWS

The first to wear out is tooth enamel , an extremely hard tissue that can take years to deteriorate. However, when the enamel is already worn and it reaches dentin , the rate of wear will potentially be increased since this tissue is much softer and easier to wear. When the degree of destruction of the teeth is very advanced it can give sensitivity.

If my teeth are already worn, is there a solution?

Of course! In these cases, oral rehabilitation treatment with Dr. Jaume Casaponsa should be considered. The level of competence of our specialists, that of the dental prosthesis laboratories with which we work and the technology that surrounds us, allow us to treat severe cases of constipation or bruxism and recover both lost function and aesthetics.

BRUXISM AND TEMPORO-MANDIBULAR JOINT

The temporomandibular joint or TMJ is what allows the movements of the jaw. Its most common pathology is TMJ syndrome or dysfunction , and bruxist patients are much more likely to suffer from it. Our ATM specialist, la Dr. Laida Comino, will assess your case and advise you on the best option to alleviate the effects of bruxism on your joint!

Symptomatology of TMJ

  • Pain in one or both joints
  • Pain in the jaw or other parts of the face such as the cheeks
  • Pain in and around the ear
  • Headache
  • Noises or clicks when opening the mouth
  • Inability to open and close the jaw normally

THE MOST IMPORTANT, PREVENTION!

However, our main objective is always prevention ; avoid reaching these levels of destruction. The most effective solution to protect your teeth and joint is a discharge splint . It is a piece of transparent and hard acrylic resin made to measure in the laboratory that is placed in one of the two dental arches and that the patient uses in those situations in which he can sawn or brux, especially at night. This splint has a muscle-relaxing effect and, in addition, acts as an interposition material so that what wears is the resin and not the teeth.
