TEETH WHITENING AND DENTAL AESTHETICS

The passage of time, as well as certain habits such as smoking, and the consumption of certain medications or highly colored drinks such as tea or coffee, are causes of losing that much-desired luminosity of our teeth. If you want to lighten the shade of your teeth, teeth whitening is the right treatment for you!

At the Gaset Lacasa Dental Clinic, we offer both in-clinic and outpatient (at-home) teeth whitening treatment, although what we always advise in order to obtain the best results and that they last as long as possible is the combination of both . However, and regardless of the treatment that is carried out, it is important to evaluate very well the origin of the coloring or darkening and to do a preliminary analysis of your case.

The procedure is simple. The first step is always to protect your lips and gums with mouthguards and a gum protector to prevent them from coming into contact with the whitening gel and being damaged. Once the teeth are well isolated, the whitening product is applied to their surface, a gel with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide .

One of the myths about tooth whitening is that it damages the enamel. It is false, the whitening gel does not harm the enamel , what it does is open the pores of the enamel, filtering and acting on the inner layer, the dentin.

What is true is that teeth whitening treatment can cause tooth sensitivity a couple of days after the treatment as the dental tubules take two to three days to close again. This also means that a white diet is advised during these days after treatment. Therefore, the consumption of drinks such as tea, coffee or red wine, foods that can stain the teeth and also tobacco is not recommended.

THE ALTERNATIVE: THE LAMELS OR “VENEERS”

There are cases where tooth whitening is not enough to achieve the desired goals. The solution is aesthetic lamellae or “veneers” , very thin sheets that adhere to the front surface of the tooth after a slight preparation. In addition to solving color problems, these sheets can also solve other aesthetic problems such as:

  • The black line between the gum and the tooth of patients wearing some type of metal prosthesis.
  • Irregular or unsightly tooth shapes .
  • Diastemas (spaces between the teeth).
  • Microdontia (smaller than normal teeth).
  • Fractured, worn or filed teeth.
